Intelligent Traffic
Management

Design a traffic system that dynamically changes signal timings based on vehicle density. Master Sensor Integration, Webster's Formula, and Phase Sequencing.

SIGNAL LAB

PHASE 1 (N-S) STOP

Traffic Density (N-S): HIGH

Traffic Density (E-W): LOW

DESIGN PROCESS

Key steps for signal timing and junction design.

1

Traffic Survey

Conduct detailed volume counts (PCU/hr) for all intersecting arms during peak flow hours.

2

Cycle Design

Determine Optimum Cycle Time (C0) using Webster's formula and calculate Green Time for each phase.

3

Controller Setup

Install Controller Unit (Microcontroller/PLC). Connect signal outputs and vehicle sensors (loops/IR) for real-time data.

4

Density Logic

Program the controller to extend green time for phases with high sensor activity (Intelligent Traffic System).

Signal Timing Calculation

// Optimum Cycle Time (Webster's Formula - Simplified) // Inputs L = 10; // Total Lost Time (sec) per cycle Y = 0.5; // Sum of Critical Flow Ratios (y1 + y2) I = 4; // Inter-green time // Webster's Optimal Cycle Time (C0) // C0 = (1.5 * L + 5) / (1 - Y) C0 = (1.5 * 10 + 5) / (1 - 0.5); C0 = 20 / 0.5 = 40 seconds; // Effective Green Time (G_eff) G_eff = C0 - L; // 40 - 10 = 30 seconds // Allocated Green Time (Gi) // Gi = (y_i / Y) * G_eff; // Example: G(NS) = (0.3 / 0.5) * 30 = 18 seconds // Example: G(EW) = (0.2 / 0.5) * 30 = 12 seconds
