Generate electricity from vegetables! Build a simple chemical battery using potatoes, zinc nails, and copper coins to light up an LED or run a clock.

How to Make It?

Follow these simple steps to build your model.

Prepare Potatoes

Take 2-3 clean raw potatoes. Lemons or oranges can also be used as alternatives.

Insert Electrodes

Insert one Galvanized Nail (Zinc) and one Copper Coin/Wire into each potato. Keep them apart.

Series Connection

Connect the Copper of potato #1 to the Zinc of potato #2 using a wire/alligator clip.

Light It Up

Connect the free ends (Zinc #1 and Copper #2) to the legs of a small LED bulb. Watch it glow!

The Logic

Electrochemistry

Electrolyte

Potato juice contains phosphoric acid, which acts as an electrolyte allowing ions to flow.

Redox Reaction

Zinc loses electrons (Oxidation) and Copper gains electrons (Reduction), creating current flow.

Voltage Addition

Connecting cells in Series adds up their voltage (0.9V + 0.9V = 1.8V) to power the LED.
